Description
A dialogue in bold color and texture.
The Conversation by Marie P. Mudafort is a small oil on canvas painting that reinterprets Matisse’s iconic work through a contemporary lens. Two figures face one another in profile, engaging in a silent exchange within a vividly abstract space. The composition balances the flatness of the figures with the three-dimensional texture of layered oil paint, creating a striking tension between form and surface.
A rich, textured blue background anchors the scene, making the lighter-toned figures appear to float and pop, emphasizing their interaction and the energy of the moment. Mudafort’s dynamic brushwork transforms a simple dialogue into a visually compelling exploration of space, color, and human connection.
This artwork would make a captivating statement wall piece, ideal for drawing the eye and sparking conversation in any room.

DETAILS
Marie P. Mudafort is a contemporary painter originally from Northern California, now based in New York City’s Lower East Side. She earned her BA from the National School of Fine Arts in Mexico City and has developed a practice that explores the myths, icons, and fantasies of American culture.
In her work, Mudafort investigates the excesses and contradictions of the American imagination—from the rustic mythology of the Wild West to the enduring power of cultural symbols. Her series If You Want To Be A Legend, Just Go Ahead And Be One delves into the ambiguities of national identity, unravelling the drama, fantasy, and existential undercurrents hidden beneath familiar icons.
Drawing from Western art history and the language of the icon, Mudafort crafts paintings that make excess tangible, offering viewers a vivid panorama of contemporary culture. Her work invites reflection, encouraging spectators to see, question, and reconsider the narratives that shape the collective imagination.
