Description
A contemporary reimagining of an icon.
Mona Lisa by Marie P. Mudafort is oil on canvas, a bold reinterpretation with textured layers of abstract oil forms overlapping across the surface. A dynamic veil of color and movement greets the viewer. Beneath these expressive gestures, the familiar gaze of the Mona Lisa peers out from the underpainting, grounding the work in both art history and modern experimentation.
The interplay between the iconic portrait and Mudafort’s abstract interventions invites viewers to consider how images endure, transform, and re-emerge through time. Both playful and profound, the painting balances reverence for tradition with a fearless embrace of contemporary abstraction.
This artwork would make a commanding statement wall piece, offering a powerful conversation between past and present.

DETAILS
Marie P. Mudafort is a contemporary painter originally from Northern California, now based in New York City’s Lower East Side. She earned her BA from the National School of Fine Arts in Mexico City and has developed a practice that explores the myths, icons, and fantasies of American culture.
In her work, Mudafort investigates the excesses and contradictions of the American imagination—from the rustic mythology of the Wild West to the enduring power of cultural symbols. Her series If You Want To Be A Legend, Just Go Ahead And Be One delves into the ambiguities of national identity, unravelling the drama, fantasy, and existential undercurrents hidden beneath familiar icons.
Drawing from Western art history and the language of the icon, Mudafort crafts paintings that make excess tangible, offering viewers a vivid panorama of contemporary culture. Her work invites reflection, encouraging spectators to see, question, and reconsider the narratives that shape the collective imagination.
